Red Balloons was inspired by the music called Red Balloons by Katie Melua. Fortunately, by the time this music became available I had been to the Bristol Hot Air Balloon Fiesta in the UK many times over a number of years, so I did have a number of images to select from.
Many of those used in flight had to be removed from their original backgrounds. This was achieved using Photoshop's Layers and Selections. The cut-outs also had to be done with a degree of patience and care. We needed to make sure the balloon baskets remained attached to the balloons by the fine cables that hold things together. Another problem is making sure that I didn't have any unsightly halos around the balloons after they were cut out.
