  4. The Storm Season

Through a little good luck and a bit of planning my Son and I were out in the countryside during storm season on the Sunshine Coast of Australia. This storm appeared very quickly from a hot sunny day.  My son had his Mavic Pro Drone and I was using my Canon SLR. These are the images that we captured, with just one or two others added from other photoshoots to make up the numbers.

  5. Red Balloons

Red Balloons was inspired by the music called Red Balloons by Katie Melua. Fortunately, by the time this music became available I had been to the Bristol Hot Air Balloon Fiesta in the UK many times over a number of years, so I did have a number of images to select from.   Many of those used in flight had to be removed from their original backgrounds. This was achieved using Photoshop's Layers and Selections. The cut-outs also had to be done with a degree of patience and care. We needed to make sure the balloon baskets remained attached to the balloons by the fine cables that hold things together. Another problem is making sure that I didn't have any unsightly halos around the balloons after they were cut out.

  6. The Drones are Coming

This was a very quickly created slideshow with images shot from a Dji Mavic Pro Drone during a few weeks holiday in Australia by my son. The Mavic Pro is a great piece of kit that opens up enormous possibilities for photographers. Although it only captures 12mp, these images were all taken in Raw format.

  7. Sand Soda and Limestone

A technique I first used in an AV back in my film days some 20 years ago, but brought up to date and into the digital age. Its pretty good fun too. Use your PC monitor as a light, colour and texture source for transparent subjects like glass.

  8. A Journey into Photography

Audio Visual can be used in a wide variety of ways, but for me personally I use it as a vehicle to display my images. Therefore the quality of those images is the most important thing to me. However, we still need an angle or a hook to provide a framework for what we are doing.
In this presentation I have used commentary and limited information to allow me to display a variety of images from every place we visited on a recent trip. I have also broken a cardinal rule of AV, but the least said about that, the better. Hopefully the quality of the presentation and the images, will overcome that....

  9. Living on the Edge

Following a recent 7 week road trip down the East and South Coast of Australia, this is the first images of that trip presented as an audio visual. It sums up the drama and fascination we have with the sea and the music that accompanies the images must also be dramatic.

  12. Civil War

Filters applied to images have not been very well accepted in the digital age and some of the blame for that can be laid at the door of some photographers. Those who think that adding a filter effect to a badly composed and exposed image, will make it appealing. Sadly, it will not.
The trick, in my view, is to use filters to create something more unique and for that we need to put in just a little effort, thought and creativity.  The technique for creating the images you will see in this slide show is available as a video download from our Photoshop MasterClass section HERE

  13. Scotland A Brief Moment in Time

Evolutionary time is almost impossible to imagine
The original of this sequence used 3 full screen video clips, but unless it was viewed on a powerful desktop, the video was not smooth enough for my liking. When shown on a moderate Laptop, the video full screen does not work so good. Hence the reduction of the video to insets rather than full screen. In my view the video is a vital part of the whole thing with the music

  16. Its Just One Minute

I was recently asked to judge an AV competition of just one minute duration and was surprised to see 27 entries. I first thought one minute was a little too tight on time, but after trying it, the one thing it does do is focus the mind on the one minute length

  17. Cornwall in Winter 2003

This Slide Show was the subject of a Video Step by step tutorial that was made for Digital Photo Magazine in 2003. The subject was making a slide show with PicturesToExe and it appeared on the magazine cover disk along with this slide show that was the subject of the tutorial.
I have adjusted the format of it a little for PC and Mac, but the slide show remains as was made in 2003. The slide show helped (a little) to raise awareness of  PTE in the UK

  18. London Calling

I have had the idea for this slide show for some time, but a recent visit to the UK allowed me to shoot the images. They required Monochrome conversion with strategic colour. They also needed to be aligned just as they would be if shot from a Tripod, but these were not. All hand held, so align techniques were required to make them line up for the audio visual

  21. Distressed Edges

Creating these edges is good fun, creative and of course it's always nice to create something unique. Applying them via PTE masks is a way to retain full flexibility of your slide show.

You can change the edge effect, the background colour or texture and also the image. Adding animation too if you wish

  22. Rosewood Railway

We were informed about this old railway that only steams one Sunday per month, but being a fan of old railway yards we decided to take a look mid week. The location is just south west of Brisbane and it was a very hot day, about 32c with bright sun and we got there about 2pm..

So, generally speaking, not the best conditions to shoot images of an old railway where we sometimes struggle with contrast even at the best of times. In bright Australian sun the situation could be a whole lot worse. Having said that, I did have my converted Infra-Red camera with me and I wanted to try that out in those conditions because one thing I have learned with Infra-Red is how tolerant it is with high contrast.

The images were shot and originally viewed in January, but it wasn't until April that I returned to them and saw some potential. Give yourself a bit of time and you will see your own images in a different light to what you did at the time you took them.

  23. Cold War Scrapyard

Audio Visual can be many things to many people, but a lot of photographers use it as a vehicle to display the many images they create. We visit places of interest and shoot lots of images, but what do we do with them. If you are a Camera Club member, you may be searching for that elusive competition winner, but you will have lots of others that are still worth viewing.

Here we have a collection of images shot in just a couple of hours at Newark Air Museum in the UK. Once we have taken the images we need to find a way to display them in such a way that the Audio Visual sequence becomes a photographic free standing project as a whole. We are looking to present the pictures not as a simple batch of images, but something a little better than that. (if we can)

Music is crucial to the mood we are trying to create and often difficult to find. Then we still have to manipulate the images in a way we feel is fitting to the music and the presentation as a whole.

Have we been successful? Its always difficult to tell, because we get so wrapped up in our own project and spend so much time on it, our judgement sometimes becomes a little blurred

  24. Contrast

After our visit back to England from Australia in 2014, I found I didn't have enough images taken in Cumbria (The Lake District) to be able to make the slide show I had hoped for. Lighting and weather conditions in the short time we were there, just didn't play ball. So, when that happens you have to capture what you can.
I was looking for some music for a Lakeland AV, but was beginning to come to the conclusion that I didn't have enough good images for a Lakeland Audio Visual anyway. Then an idea came to me. I wondered if I could create a mixture of images and music from England and Australia to show some of the contrasts between them

The sequence contains 4 pieces of music and a sound effect. There are about 60 images, the vast majority of them shot in the past few months. These Audio Visual sequences are a labour of love, with many hours committed to the creation of the images and the final slide show.

  25. Moving route line on a map

Many audio visual sequences will be travelogues, a record of that special holiday and to ensure your viewers enjoy the trip, an animated route on a map that moves from place to place as you show your pictures is a great way to keep the viewers with you.

Google maps are very good and you can always do a screen grab of the section you require. They can be enlarged or reduced to suite your needs and any on-screen clutter can easily be cloned out.

There are many different ways to approach this using our image editor, PTE, or external software. Probably the easiest way is cut a hole in the map and use animation to create the coloured line
