September is a great month for the mudflats south of Goeree Overflakkee.
This month discolered the samphire in a beautiful red color.
Before the sun rises, I'm already there with my camera ready, waiting for the first rays over the mudflats.

  5. Infra-Red

Humans only see and photograph a small proportion of the wavelengths of light given off by the sun, but we do have the opportunity to broaden the light we can use by photographing in Infra-Red. There are a number of ways we can have a go at Infra-Red photography and this Presentation/Tutorial takes you through the options and also the pros and cons.

One thing is certain. This is a fascinating aspect of photography and can produce some stunning results.

There is also a PDF on this subject HERE

  10. AUSCHWITZ

During WW2, Auschwitz concentration camp developed into the largest, built and operated by the Third Reich. With 3 main camps, Auschwitz I,
Auschwitz II - Berkenbau, Auschwitz III - Monowitz and 45 satellite camps.

Berkenbau was purposely built to receive the transportation of thousands of prissoners, men, women and children from across Europe in rail trucks, having travelled for days in most cases, directly into the camp.

On 27th January 2015, International Holocaust Rememberence Day, the 70th Anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz will be commemorated
with a service outside the main gate.

Words alone cannot explain your feelings when visiting Auschwitz and in this audio visual, i have tried to show why we should never forget those who died and suffered.

Please note:- There are short silent periods at the start and end.

  14. Burma - A Buddhist Home for Aged Orphan People

In the Burmese Buddhist tradition elderly people are usually taken care of by family, they don’t live in retirement homes like we do in the West. But the residents of the Buddhist Home for Aged People don’t have any family members, so they are considered orphans, needing to be taken care of by the community. There is only one nurse taking care of more than 80 people, so they take care of each other. Beautiful people all. They live on donations from Buddhist people.

It is the most religious Buddhist country in terms of the proportion of monks in the population and proportion of income spent on religion. Monks are venerated members of Burmese society. The monks wear red/maroon coloured robes and the nuns pink coloured robes with a sash over their left shoulder.

  16. Pictures at an Exhibition

Modest Mussorgsky visited an art exhibition and set to music his interpretation of the pictures he viewed. I'm not that clever so have done it the other way around and set pictures to his music. The music is over 30 minutes long but the show certainly isn't. Took a long time to shoot all the images I have used, but visited some very famous galleries all over europe, during my usual tourist travels. This show is priceless, well the paintings are anyway. Hope you enjoy.

  21. Contrast

After our visit back to England from Australia in 2014, I found I didn't have enough images taken in Cumbria (The Lake District) to be able to make the slide show I had hoped for. Lighting and weather conditions in the short time we were there, just didn't play ball. So, when that happens you have to capture what you can.
I was looking for some music for a Lakeland AV, but was beginning to come to the conclusion that I didn't have enough good images for a Lakeland Audio Visual anyway. Then an idea came to me. I wondered if I could create a mixture of images and music from England and Australia to show some of the contrasts between them

The sequence contains 4 pieces of music and a sound effect. There are about 60 images, the vast majority of them shot in the past few months. These Audio Visual sequences are a labour of love, with many hours committed to the creation of the images and the final slide show.

  24. Scotland

Winner of the UK Photo Harmony, '5 to 8' Competition, organised by Bridgend Camera Club.

    Judges comments:

“You know when you see the first picture that this is going to be special. The photography throughout is stunning. The Ken Burns effect of gently zooming every image helps keep the momentum going. The "Adagio" from the film "Sunshine" is a wonderful piece and the drama of the music complements the drama of the landscapes completely. Maybe the author should warn the projectionist to keep the volume down during the relatively quiet beginning otherwise the audience will get blown away! The images and transitions are totally in sync with the music. Here is somebody who listens to and knows his music. There is perfect harmony between successive images, shapes, colours, with not a single jarring line or horizon. Great care has been taken constructing this sequence, helped by the fact that the author no doubt has a large number of first class pictures from which to choose. The whole thing builds and develops. Swells in the music are used to highlight the close ups of rocks, barnacles and ice fragments. The percussion is used to show the railway section. When I saw the classic image of the Cullins from Elgol I thought "this is the end", but the final picture was even better. It's clear from the filename (v9) that this has undergone a lengthy period of revision, honing and pruning, so that what we see today is powerful, passionate and intense. This is a good lesson, not to be satisfied with the first attempt. The only criticism I have is that the title is what I would call a "working title". Such a dramatic presentation needs a dramatic title, "The drama of the Highlands" or "Elemental landscape", "Wild Scotland", "Untamed wilderness"...â€

  25. Rosewood Railway

We were informed about this old railway that only steams one Sunday per month, but being a fan of old railway yards we decided to take a look mid week. The location is just south west of Brisbane and it was a very hot day, about 32c with bright sun and we got there about 2pm..

So, generally speaking, not the best conditions to shoot images of an old railway where we sometimes struggle with contrast even at the best of times. In bright Australian sun the situation could be a whole lot worse. Having said that, I did have my converted Infra-Red camera with me and I wanted to try that out in those conditions because one thing I have learned with Infra-Red is how tolerant it is with high contrast.

The images were shot and originally viewed in January, but it wasn't until April that I returned to them and saw some potential. Give yourself a bit of time and you will see your own images in a different light to what you did at the time you took them.
